Dental crowns may be an option when treatments like veneers, fillings, inlays, onlays, or extractions are not suitable or necessary.

Our dentist at Djawdan Center for Implant and Restorative Dentistry can resolve a majority of these dental concerns with dental crowns.

What Are Dental Crowns?

Crowns are tooth-shaped coverings that dentists put on existing teeth to upgrade their appearance, make them sturdier, rebuild their functionality, offer protection, or promote their health. These tooth covers encase the tooth by bonding over it with the help of an adhesive or dental cement.

Benefits of Dental Crowns

Tooth crowns can prolong the lifespan of natural teeth by fixing breaks, wear, decay, or cracks. They prevent further deterioration of teeth from occurring. Further, dental crowns elevate the appearance of your teeth. Our dentist can use a crown to cover heavy discoloration or developmental staining that cannot be treated with regular whitening techniques. Moreover, these tooth covers improve chewing function by strengthening weak teeth. Their versatility is also another reason why dentists use them.

Types of Dental Crowns

From metal to porcelain to a combination of porcelain and metal or composite resin, dental crowns come in different types.

Porcelain crowns are presently the most commonly utilized crowns due to their aesthetic qualities and durability. They are constructed to color-match your natural teeth. As such, they give a natural look.

Zirconia, another option, is a porcelain material intended for the back teeth because of its extreme strength. Zirconia is also believed to be stronger and more durable than natural teeth. Metal crowns do not break or chip easily and last the longest. They also require less removal of the enamel.

When Are Dental Crowns Needed?

Our dentist may recommend dental crowns if your tooth has suffered trauma that causes breakage, cracks, or fractures. We may also suggest these restorations when your tooth is malformed or discolored or when receiving dental implants. After a root canal treatment, we may mount a dental crown on the tooth, helping it to remain protected and avoid additional damage. Sometimes, a cavitated tooth or a tooth with a large filling may break off or crack, hence necessitating the need for a dental crown to cover the tooth. Where you have lost teeth and dental implants are to be placed, dental crowns may be used to serve the role of the natural crowns of those teeth.

The Dental Crown Procedure

Placing dental crowns typically requires two visits. Initially, the tooth is prepared with a process that involves removing the damaged part and shaving it a little to properly accommodate the crown. Digital x-rays and 3D scans are also conducted. Digital or manual impressions are obtained to help construct the restorations.

At this point, you receive temporary crowns. The shaved-down teeth will need protection while waiting for the final crowns to be ready. Again, you will be using the teeth that have been prepared, so in order to reduce sensitivity, temporary crowns will need to be fitted. Once your final crowns are ready, you will come in for the placement. We take out the previously affixed temporary crowns, and the lasting ones are permanently secured in place.

Caring for Dental Crowns

Just like your natural teeth, you will have to take proper care of the crowns. Even so, no additional special care may be required. You have to brush gently with a soft-bristle brush and fluoride toothpaste. Flossing between the teeth is also important. To help eradicate dental plaque and bacteria, antibacterial mouthwash will help. Further, steer clear of extremely crunchy, hard, and chewy foods. While crowns are strong, they may not withstand heavy force.

People who grind and clench their teeth may ask us to provide them with a custom-fitted mouthguard to protect their crown restorations and the remaining teeth. Visiting our dental office for regular checkups and cleanings is necessary. We can observe how the crowns are doing and whether there might be any concerns that could put them at risk of malfunctioning or weakening.

Common FAQs about Dental Crowns

In anticipation of having your damaged tooth restored, you may want to ask more about dental crowns. Here, we have answered common questions we hear from patients who visit us needing to get dental crowns.

How long do dental crowns last?

After placement, dental crowns can last more than a decade, but only if proper care is given. Typically, dental crowns have a lifespan ranging from five to 15 years, though some people have reported using their crowns for up to 30 years.

Is the dental crown procedure painful?

You should not expect to have pain when receiving dental crowns. It is a non-invasive procedure that will not involve making incisions or accessing the interior of the teeth or gums.

We utilize anesthetic to numb you if needed. Nonetheless, a little discomfort or sensitivity may be encountered after the placement of the crown, but over the counter medications can help.

Can dental crowns be placed on front teeth?

You can have dental crowns mounted on your front teeth. Since these teeth are visible, we prefer to use tooth-colored options such as porcelain crowns.

Can dental crowns be used for cosmetic purposes?

Dental crowns have been utilized to cover heavy discolorations or damages that impact your smile, such as misshapen teeth or broken teeth.

Let us discuss your options when you visit us to see if crowns are the ideal solution or if other cosmetic treatments like veneers may work for your case.

Will dental crowns match the color of my natural teeth?

Porcelain, zirconia, and porcelain-fused-to-metal crowns can match your natural teeth color. They are fabricated to align with the color of other teeth. That is why these crowns provide a natural-looking smile.
