What Are Dental Crowns?
Crowns are dental caps. Instead of techniques that make repairs to the tooth, crowns completely cover the tooth. In the past, crowns used to be made of silver or gold. However, many people want their teeth to be uniformly white across their mouths. Crowns now come in porcelain over metal, so they more closely match your teeth.
Because the crowns have metal, they also are very strong, and rarely fracture or break. Crowns made with porcelain over metal can strengthen your tooth, and restore the appearance of your tooth.
What Are Crowns Used For?
Crowns have many different uses. First, crowns are used to strengthen a tooth that has a large filling. In the 1970s and 1980s, dentistry was still a fairly young science. When a patient got a cavity, it was drilled out completely, as well as surrounding tissue and tooth, to guard against additional infection and decay. However, we have figured out over the years that it is easier to simply take out the decay and fill the tooth with a smaller amount of filling. That’s because this is the best way to preserve the tooth.
However, there are many adults walking around now with huge fillings in their teeth. Over time, gaps can appear in the spaces between the filling and the tooth. These spaces can open up the tooth for decay. A crown placed over the tooth strengthens the tooth and guards the tooth against infection. If a crown is placed over the tooth, it also saves the tooth itself. We are all about saving teeth because by saving the tooth, we save jawbone.
Crowns can also be used to cover teeth that are broken or fractured to save and protect the remaining parts of the tooth. Many adults have bitten down onto something hard and found a piece of a cracked tooth in their hand. Crowns can protect the remaining part of your tooth.
How Are Dental Crowns Placed?
First, we will fit you with a temporary crown. We will make a mold of your tooth to make sure your permanent crown will fit into your jaw. When the crown comes in, we will sand your tooth down a bit, and cement your new crown on top of your tooth. We may have to file your tooth down a little, to make sure it is a perfect fit. That’s it! Crowns are amazing, aren’t they?
