Why Does Your Jaw Click and What Does It Mean?

Posted on 4/30/2020 by Kian Djawdan DMD
Why Does Your Jaw Click and What Does It Mean? Does your jaw pop or click at various times and you are wondering what might be causing it? If you hear a clicking sound when eating, talking, or even just opening up your mouth wide, then there are a few possible issues that could be producing this type of issue. While it may not be an emergency situation if it isn't accompanied by pain or discomfort, it also doesn't mean that is something that should be ignored indefinitely. And in the cases where pain is involved, it works to narrow down the possible causes. Here are just a couple of examples of dental issues that could be at play in your jaw sounds:

Possible Sign of TMD

The first thing that we would look into is the possibility that these sounds are associated with TMD. Because the main aspect of this condition is a misaligned jaw, one of the first and most commonly reoccurring symptoms are clicking and popping sounds when chewing. The quicker you come in to get this looked at further the better your chances of dealing with it effectively in the long run.

Nail Biting and Teeth Grinding

These are a couple of other less thought-of causes for knocking the jawbone slightly out of alignment, though this problem will usually take care of itself one the habits are broken. Nail biting might be easy, but grinding the teeth is something that is usually done subconsciously or even while sleeping at night and may not be so simple to break. To set up a time to come by our office and have our dental professionals take a closer look at what may be causing this problem in your particular case, simply give our courteous and highly trained staff a call today. We'll be glad to help.
