Tooth decay in children
Posted on 8/8/2022 by Kian Djawdan DMD
Tooth decay in childrenTooth decay is a common occurrence in children since they are not aware of proper techniques for brushing their teeth. As a result, it is important to guide your little ones when it comes to cleaning and brushing their teeth. In this article, we discuss the necessary steps you should take to protect your children from developing tooth decay.

Good oral hygiene

Healthy oral hygiene involves brushing teeth at least twice a day, in the morning and before bed. Children below the age of six years require adult guidance when brushing their teeth. Our specialists recommend using a soft-bristled toothbrush to gently brush your little one's teeth and gums. You should also help them floss their teeth at least once a day for better oral hygiene. If your child is still an infant, clean their gums gently with a warm cloth after meals.

Reducing intake of sugars

Acid-producing bacteria that corrode the teeth weakening them and leading to tooth decay feed on the sugary substances consumed. It is therefore vital to reduce the amount of sugar in your child's diet. Choose healthy snacks such as nuts, cheese, and berries to prevent your kids from tooth decay.

Fluoride

Fluoride is highly effective in fighting tooth decay in children. Our practice recommends using fluoride toothpaste to brush your child's teeth. This step allows the fluoride present in the toothpaste to combine with the teeth making them stronger and more resistant to tooth decay.

Regular dental visits

Good oral hygiene, limiting sugar, and using fluoride toothpaste are just the start of your journey to preventing tooth decay in your child. Visiting our practice every six months for regular cleanings and exams will help detect any early signs of decay and treat them before they get worse.
