An Overview of the Basics of an Apicoectomy
Posted on 7/6/2020 by Kian Djawdan DMD
When an oral surgeon is dealing with an infection that simply cannot be treated successfully with a basic root canal, then a procedure referred to as an apicoectomy may be necessary. In an effort to save the tooth and make sure that the underlying area is free from infection and bacteria, this type of oral surgery has become quite common and highly refined in the last 15 years. Relying on a number of innovative techniques and advanced equipment, this might be just the solution to your dental needs. It consists of two basic and simple steps:
Incision and Removal
The first part of any surgery after preparation is obviously the initial incision. The fantastic thing about modern apicoectomies is the fact that the incisions they can operate through are incredibly small, much smaller than they were able to perform with even a decade ago. Because the tools and equipment are so technologically advanced, including mirrors and lights which function on the microscopic level, removing the infected tissue (along with the end of the root tips) becomes much simpler and more precise.
Filling and Stitching
Once the first part is complete, the surgeon moves right along to the finishing stages where he or she may insert a small filling in the end of the root canal to help seal it, although this is not always necessary. After that, sutures will be placed in the tiny incision and the process will be completed. Over the next few months, the bone should heal around the root's end, correcting the issues that required surgery in the first place.
As with many other dental procedures, apicoectomies are often delayed long past the time that they have become necessary. To find out more information about this procedure, simply get in touch with our offices at your earliest convenience.
