What is L-PRF and How Does It Work?
Posted on 2/26/2020 by Kian Djawdan DMD
What is it?
Similar to a scab on a scrape, L-PRF is used to create an all natural blood clot in dentistry. Leukocyte-Rich Platelet Fibrin, or L-PRF for short, is basically a biocompatible band-aid to help heal surgical sites from within. Leukocytes are white blood cells, which are responsible for helping our bodies heal after trauma, surgery, or illness. Platelets are another type of blood cell that attract more white blood cells to increase healing, and forming blood clots. Fibrin is another component to blood that helps platelets to create blood clots.
How does it work?
A sample of your own blood is taken at the beginning of your appointment. Dr. Djawdan then places the sample in a collection tube, which goes into the IntraSpin centrifuge to separate specific blood components from one another. After only a few minutes, your blood is now a bioactive clot ready for your procedure. No other additives or ingredients are used during this process, making it 100% natural! Because it is your own blood that is used, it promotes healing and bone growth like no other! When placed in surgery sites, your body's own natural healing proteins are released which creates a more efficient healing process. For patients with significant bone loss, L-PRF can be mixed with biocompatible bone growth materials to aid in bone regeneration.
Is it painful?
L-PRF is only as painful as a routine blood drawing! This can be done while under sedation, so you can be asleep for the entire appointment.
