What Is Alveoloplasty?
Posted on 7/1/2024 by Kian Djawdan DMD
Alveoloplasty is a surgical procedure that involves reshaping the alveolar ridge, the part of the jawbone that houses teeth. It is commonly performed by a specialized dentist or oral surgeon after tooth extraction. The goal is to smoothen and round out the alveolar bone in preparation for further dental work, like dentures or dental implant placement.
When Is Alveoloplasty Necessary?
Alveoloplasty is particularly beneficial after multiple tooth extractions. The procedure helps to recontour the alveolar bone, ensuring a more comfortable fit for your replacement teeth. It can also be performed during tooth extraction to reshape the jawbone, minimize complications, and speed up the healing process.
What to Expect Before and During the Procedure
Whether you are undergoing alveoloplasty before tooth extraction or after healing, the procedure follows a standard protocol. First, your dentist or oral surgeon will assess your jawbone to determine the need for contouring. If you are a candidate for the procedure, you will be administered an anesthetic to numb the area. To ensure your comfort, the dentist or oral surgeon may also provide a sedative to help you relax during the procedure.
Once the anesthetic is in effect, the dentist/surgeon creates a cut on the gum tissue to reveal the bone underneath. They carefully reshape the bone using specialized instruments, smoothing out any irregularities and ensuring proper alignment. Once the jawbone is smooth and uniform, the dentist or oral surgeon closes the incision with sutures.
Post-Surgery Recovery
Following an alveoloplasty, the dental specialist or oral surgeon will provide aftercare instructions to help with your recovery. Mild swelling and discomfort are expected after the procedure. Fortunately, these symptoms usually subside within a week. Recovery times following the procedure may vary from patient to patient, with most people recovering fully within four to six weeks. That said, most people can return to work or resume everyday routines within a few days of the procedure.
