Can Dental Implants Cause Jaw Bone Loss?

One of the most important aspects of dental implants is that they permanently replace your missing tooth at the roots. Once a dental implant has been placed into your jawbone, it stays there permanently and acts in the same way as your original tooth.

Understanding Dental Implants

Before you can undergo dental implant surgery, your dentist will assess your jawbone to determine if you have enough bone mass. An empty socket left alone for too long usually affects the strength of the jawbone, usually at the point that previously held your natural tooth. Your dentist will perform some bone grafting to improve your jawbone mass before dental implant surgery.

During the implant surgery, your dentist will insert a titanium rod into your jawbone to act as the root of the new artificial tooth. The titanium root bonds with the jawbone in a process called osseointegration. A temporary crown will be placed on the titanium rod, and you will be allowed to go home for a few months until the titanium fuses fully with the jawbone. The last stage of the dental implant process involves your dentist placing the artificial tooth in the abutment that will hold it in place for years to come.

How Dental Implants Help Regenerate Your Jawbone

As you use the new tooth to chew food, it gains strength, which means that the new titanium rod stimulates the jawbone and signals your body to send nutrients to the jawbone to be used for cell regeneration and tissue repair. With time, the structure of your jawbone will be restored fully.

Missing Teeth Causes Jaw Bone Loss

Tooth loss has an overall impact on your jawbone and the resultant shape of your face. The missing tooth can cause jawbone atrophy, a condition that defines the progressive decline in the structure and general health of your jawbone. The result is an extensive loss of bone mass, which becomes reabsorbed and used in other areas of the jaw where your natural teeth are still in place.

Dental implants do not cause jawbone loss. Instead, dental implants can help your jawbone regenerate and regain its original strength.
